Event staging in Barcelona: confidential set at Torre Melina

Written by Marina Calabuig | Oct 27, 2026, 10:00:00 AM

Event staging in Barcelona for a camera-led event means building a set that works for the room and looks flawless on screen. That was the brief for this confidential corporate event, produced by Novelty Spain at Torre Melina, a Gran Meliá Hotel, on Barcelona's Avinguda Diagonal.

Out of confidentiality and respect for our clients, we can't share who was behind the event or what it was about. What we can share is how it was done: a full set build and a 4K multi-camera broadcast system, all from one local team.

Confidential events: discretion is part of the service

Many of the events we produce for international clients run under NDAs: launches that aren't public yet, internal leadership meetings, gatherings with high-profile guests. For these projects, discretion matters as much as technical quality.

In practice, that means a crew that knows what can and can't be shared, restricted or no photography, and no communication without the agency's or brand's sign-off. This client asked for full confidentiality, and we've kept it in this case study too.

Why is staging a broadcast set in a hotel so demanding?

A hotel function room is not a TV studio. Ceiling height, access routes, house safety rules and tight build windows all shape what can be done. The production was coming from abroad, so it needed one Spanish partner to handle set and technology together, with a single point of contact.

  • Working within hotel rules: Torre Melina has its own safety and contractor coordination procedures, which Novelty Spain handled before the kit arrived.
  • Camera-ready finishes: everything in shot (risers, side walls, monitor covers, microphones) had to be spotless, because the camera magnifies every flaw.
  • Heights and sightlines: the LED screen, cameras and control position each needed their own level.
  • Short build window: there was just one day of technical build between delivery and the first day of filming.

Event staging in Barcelona: building the set

The foundation was the stage design and build, the core of any staging for events that has to work on camera. Novelty Spain installed an 8 x 3 m main stage on 40 cm risers and, behind it, a 6 x 2 m platform raised to 1.2 m for the LED screen, braced for stability.

The visible set was built on top of that structure:

  • 24 m² of stage with white carpet, skirting and stairs.
  • A custom 12.5 x 4.8 m white central backdrop.
  • Seamless white side builds, 7 m in total and 4.2 m high.
  • Custom covers for the confidence monitors and LED battens, so the technology disappeared into the set.
  • Set dressing: shelving, lamps and plants to warm up the shot.

Even the gaffer tape was chosen for camera: matte, in black and white, so it would not shine under the lights. Dedicated camera risers and a 12 m² control platform completed the build, giving cameras clean angles and the crew a clear view of the stage. 4K multi-camera broadcast inside the hotel

The broadcast system was built around three Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2 4K cameras on 200 m SMPTE fibre, which frees camera positions from the distance limits of copper cable. Canon 4K lenses, including an HJ40x10 for tight shots from the back of the room, sat on Sachtler tripods with dollies. An extra URSA covered roaming shots and a Panasonic PTZ was run from an AW-RP150 controller.

What does a professional event broadcast control room need?

Role Equipment
Vision mixing Blackmagic ATEM Constellation 8K with 2 M/E Advanced Panel
Camera shading ATEM Camera Control Panel and 17" Canon 4K reference monitor
Recording Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro recorders
Signal distribution Kiloview E1-S IPTV encoder and 65" Samsung display
Crew comms Clear-Com FreeSpeak II with 5 wireless beltpacks

Shading from the control room keeps all three URSAs matched in colour and exposure, and intercom keeps director and operators in sync on every cut.

Why use one partner for staging for events and broadcast?

When the set and the cameras come from different suppliers, problems surface where the two meet: a riser that sits too low for the shot, a side wall that reflects the lights, a monitor cover that blocks ventilation. Here, the same team set the stage heights with lenses and camera positions in mind, and reserved the control area from day one.

For a production working from abroad, that means fewer coordination calls, one build plan agreed with the hotel and one accountable team on site. On a confidential event there's one more benefit: fewer suppliers involved means fewer people with access to sensitive information.

A local crew and logistics you don't have to manage

Equipment left Novelty Spain's warehouse in Sant Feliu de Llobregat in its own 9-metre truck and was delivered to Torre Melina early in the morning, with the hotel already briefed. On site, the production dealt with one Novelty Spain team from build to derig.

The result: a hotel set with a studio finish

  • One partner for set and technology: staging and broadcast came from the same team, with a single line of coordination with the hotel.
  • Designed for camera: riser levels, custom covers and matte finishes kept every shot clean.
  • Broadcast-grade production: three 4K cameras on fibre, colour control and 4K recording.
  • Confidentiality kept: the project was delivered with the discretion the client required, on site and afterwards.

Torre Melina joins other Barcelona hotels where Novelty Spain has produced events, such as the Grand Hyatt for the TE Connectivity conference. Choosing a venue? These five questions for picking an event hotel will help.

Conclusion

This confidential corporate event needed a Torre Melina function room turned into a seamless white studio, with 4K multi-camera coverage and full discretion. Novelty Spain delivered staging and broadcast as one project, coordinated with the hotel and on the production's timeline.
